Below are helpful but general guidelines for surgery, for specific questions or concerns please email care@hypospadias.com.

Eating Instructions:

Clear liquids – 2 1/2 hours prior to surgery – Any liquid you can see through, such as water, Pedialyte, apple juice, Gatorade and other clear juices. No orange juice.

Breast Milk – 4 hours prior to surgery. This means the last feeding needs to end at the 4 hour mark, not begin.

Formula Milk – 6 hours prior to surgery. This means the last feeding needs to end at the 6 hour mark, not begin.

Light Meals – 6 hours prior to surgery. This means the meal needs to end at the 6 hour mark, not begin. Nothing fatty: no eggs, bacon, or sausage.

Heavy Meals – 8 hours prior to surgery. This means the meal needs to end at the 8 hour mark, not begin.

P.S. For patients 10 years and older: Food and liquids should be stopped 6 hours before surgery. If you the patient currently takes medications, check with the anesthesiologist about which medications to take on the day of surgery when they call you the evening before surgery.

Helpful Surgery Hints:

CATHETER: If a catheter is placed it will be in for 7 days with the exception of the last surgical repair (ex: the 2nd surgery out of two or the 3rd surgery out of three), in which case it will be in for 14 days. We can remove it free of charge, you may choose to have another health care professional remove it, or you can even remove it at home! If you’d like to do it yourself, ask for instructions and materials! It is important that all bandages are soaked off before the catheter is removed. The patient can start bathing on day 5.

WOUNDS: You should expect plenty of swelling, bruising, and bleeding after surgery. This is normal, and will lessen each day as healing continues. Penis skin is thin and sensitive, so wounds often look more severe than they feel.

BATHING: The patient can bathe on the 5th day after surgery. Surgery day is day 1. On day five, he can bathe in warm, soapy water. Soaking will feel good and help with the healing process.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: For the first 2 weeks after surgery, avoid sports, swimming, straddle toys, bicycles, and anything that puts the weight bearing on the surgical site.

Helpful Resources:

1. Telemedicine Consultations: If you still have lingering questions that you feel would be better addressed by Dr. Bush and/or Dr. Snodgrass please let us know. We have telehealth options for patients that live too far to travel to our office for one visit. You can choose to have a video conference through our Doxy.me software. Please contact, Bri, at care@hypospadias.com if you are interested and/or have questions about how this process works.

2. Operation Happenis: The purpose of OH is to build advocacy to increase public awareness of penile birth defects. We are starting support groups to help other families struggling with this diagnosis and treatment, and continue to provide educational resources to families and healthcare professionals. They have several exciting projects on the horizon, such as mom-to-mom networks, fun family get-togethers, newborn nursery visits to increase nursing awareness of penile problems (and OH!), and quarterly newsletters. You can indicate if any (or all) of these activities are of interest to you by emailing operationhappenis@gmail.com.

3. Counseling (for patients and family members): Kyle Tillson joined Hypospadias Speciality Center in 2016. His first-hand experiences as a patient led him to pursue his passion of helping others, and he understands how important it is for individuals to develop their own strengths to overcome life’s challenges.

Whether it’s struggling with decision-making about reconstruction, coping with body image and self-esteem related to hypospadias, or play therapy to reduce children’s anxiety, Kyle enjoys working through these issues with patients and their families. He received his Bachelor of Behavioral Science degree in Psychology in 2013 and his Masters of Arts in Marriage and Family Psychology in 2015. He is available for both in-house counseling and web-based sessions for our out-of-town families. In his time off, Kyle enjoys watching football with his family and playing soccer. Kyle has a flat rate fee of $75.00 per session. If you’re interested in using Kyle’s services please contact Alexis at scheduling@hypospadias.com.
